A dream that went beyond expectations

Oscar Jr Prasek, Selby, was asked to be commander of the Frederick Schauer Legion Post #100 in Selby in 2001. He accepted with a proviso that he had a huge project in mind and if they were willing to work on it he would be their commander.

The huge project was a memorial dedicated to all veterans, men and women through peace and war with any association to Walworth County. A meeting with the Walworth County Commissioners received permission to place the monument on the courthouse lawn in Selby. A committee was formed on September 10, 2001. Oscar Jr Prasek, Wilmer Stiegelmeier, Roger Thorstenson, Joe Klevens and Phylliss Pudwill representing the Selby Legion and Auxiliary; Rudy Kramer and Carl Quenzer – Parker Browder Legion Post #4, Mobridge; Earl Frank – La Verne Bauer Legion Post #275, Java and VFW Selby/Java Post#5094; Jim Spiry and Roger Nordstrom – Mobridge VFW Post #2741. Working with Rudy Kramer, Mobridge and the Aberdeen Monument Co. it was decided there would be a 4×7 dedicatory tablet with verse and four 4×6 tablets to hold 374 names.

The site would also include benches and 3 flag poles flying the American, VFW and Legion flags and the complex would be lit for an estimated total of $60,000.

Plans for paying for the memorial were put into effect in September, 2001 through donations and a charge of $60.00 per name. Individuals, businesses, organizations cities, towns and Walworth County started donating and as of May 1, 2002 $102,405.82 had been received and 1,223 names. Because of the extraordinary response it was decided to add two more tablets bringing the total to 6 and making the risers higher than originally planned and some of the funds will be set aside for long-term maintenance. The tablets are made of black granite imported from Zimbabwe and the names sandblasted by Granite Inc., Aberdeen. “I never in my wildest dreams expected this big of a response. It’s absolutely wonderful” Prasek said.
